Frequently Asked Questions
DogWatch SmartFence®
What is a DogWatch SmartFence®?
The DogWatch SmartFence® is a hidden underground pet fencing system that uses a low-level radio signal to safely keep your dog within a designated area, like your yard, or away from areas such as gardens, patios, or pools.
Unique to DogWatch, the SmartFence communicates with you by text or email alerts if there’s a wire break, a low collar battery, or boundary testing, giving you complete peace of mind.
How does the DogWatch SmartFence® work?
A boundary wire is buried a few inches underground around your property. The transmitter inside your home sends a radio signal through that wire. Your pet wears a SmartCollar® that recognizes the signal, emitting an audible or vibration warning when the dog nears the boundary and a mild, safe correction if it proceeds further.
The SmartFence Portal, connected via your home Internet, sends real-time alerts and tracks activity through the SmartFence App on iPhone or Android.
Do I need Internet or a smartphone?
The fence works without Internet, but communication alerts and activity tracking require an Internet connection.
You can still access your account from any web-enabled computer even if you don’t use a smartphone.
What happens if my Internet stops working?
The containment system continues functioning normally. Only the alert and activity-tracking features pause until Internet service resumes.
What if my dog leaves Wi-Fi or communication range?
Your dog’s SmartCollar® will still operate safely, it’s normal for pets to explore areas beyond the portal’s range.
What if my router lacks an extra Ethernet port?
An inexpensive Ethernet switch (available at major retailers) can add ports to your router for SmartFence connectivity.
Hidden Dog Fences
What is a hidden fence?
A hidden fence, sometimes called an “invisible fence”, uses a buried wire that transmits a harmless signal to your dog’s receiver collar. It can protect outdoor areas or create indoor boundaries that keep pets off furniture or out of specific rooms.
How do hidden fences work?
When your pet nears the boundary, the collar gives a warning beep or vibration. If your pet continues, it receives a mild static correction. With training and visual flags, pets quickly learn their safe zones.
How much do hidden fences cost?
Prices vary by property size, layout, and number of pets, but DogWatch® fences typically cost far less than traditional fencing while offering more flexibility and security.
